Stouffville Lions Club - Citizens of the Year

June 27, 2014, Rick Lush

Well it has been a busy end of the week for the Stouffville Lions Club members. Last night they had their Annual Beef BBQ (See my previous post) and this evening they got, in my opinion, a really great honour. Anytime someone gets called "Citizen of the Year" you have to take notice, but when a whole group of Lions Club members are labeled "Citizens of the Year" you can not help but feel a little proud to be a Lion. That is the honour that was bestowed upon the Stouffville Lions Club members this evening. Lion Micheline Rheaume and My Self (Both from the Ajax Lions Club) were there. I managed to take some pictures of the event.

The Haliburton & District Lions Club had a BBQ as a fundraiser at the Haliburton Colourfest.  They also sold stuffed animals as a fundraiser for our next year’s Dog Guide Walk.  The Haliburton Petvalu had the tent beside them.  Since they are now a national sponsor for the Dog Guide Walk, this was an opportunity for taking this photo.  The Dalmatian is also the owner of Haliburton’s Petvalu and also she supported our dog walk in September.

SCUGOG – The Port Perry Lions Club is listening when the community needs help.

The Scugog service club stepped forward on Monday, providing the $1,500 necessary to purchase a hearing aid for 14-month-old Ava Venning.

“We’re so appreciate of this gesture,” said Lindsey Venning, Ava’s mom, as the toddler on her knee held a stuffed turkey toy.  “We didn’t know what we were going to do.  We just wanted our baby to have what she needs.”

“This has really taken a lot of stress off of us.”

That’s what the Lions club does.  We help people in need and we  help the community. – Dwight Langdon

Ava was born with moderate to severe hearing loss in her right ear

“It’s never easy to ask for help,” added Ms Venning.

It was about a month ago when a friend of Dwight Langdon, the Port Perry Lions Club’s past president, mentioned that Ms. Venning could use a little financial help.  The two were soon to contact and the service club quickly agreed to help Ms. Venning, who manages the Port Perry Tim Hortons store on Reach Street.

“That what the Lions club does,” said Mr. Langdon of the group, which has been active in Port Perry since 1937.  “We help people in need and we help the community.”

The donation wil cover the entire cost of the hearing aid, including fittings.

“That’s why we raise money,” said Lions member George Lee, watching as Ava played tug-of-war with a set of keys.  “This is who we help.”
